Common Orthodontic Corrections in Adults and Children

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry focused on the diagnosis and treatment of dental and associated facial irregularities.  The results of orthodontic treatment can be dramatic – beautiful smiles, improved dental health, and an enhanced quality of life for many people of all ages.  Orthodontic problems, which can result from genetic and environmental factors, must be diagnosed before treatment begins.  Proper diagnosis involves taking photographs, x-rays, and dental impressions, which enable Dr. Green to make decisions about the type of treatment necessary.

The average treatment time in our office is 22 months; however, treatment can last from 6 to 30 months, depending on age and the severity of the orthodontic problem.  Outstanding results are also dependent on maximizing the coordination of care between you and our practice.  We are committed to delivering the best possible treatment in order for you to achieve your orthodontic objectives.

Treatment Timing

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child receive an initial orthodontic examination as early as age 7.  The timing of orthodontic treatment is extremely important and greatly affects treatment results.  Since no two patients are alike, there is not an exact age that is best for all children to begin treatment.

Our treatment goal is to provide the best and most stable orthodontic result possible.  Orthodontic treatment is usually accomplished in one phase of treatment between the ages of 11 and 14.  However, in some cases, early treatment (Phase I treatment) may prevent more serious problems from developing, and may make treatment at a later age shorter or less complicated.  Typically, early treatment involves the use of orthodontic appliances to guide facial growth and tooth eruption.  If left untreated, treatment at a later date may be more difficult and in some cases, it may not be possible to achieve as good a result once the face and jaws have finished growing.
